Do:

FOR THE HEART OF DAILY GAMBIAN LIFE…

To truly live like a local and experience the authentic spirit of Gambia’s capital city, the Albert Market is a vibrant maze of local goods and rustic crafts that allows visitors to source the perfect souvenir whilst chatting with the locals.

Named after Queen Victoria’s husband, the market has three distinct segments.

Firstly, the tourist market offers beautiful, intricately crafted clothes and jewellery with a distinct Gambian style.

However, to really experience the authentic Gambian way of life, visitors should delve deeper into the produce market. Although the strong smell may at first seem like a deterrent, visitors should endeavour to find a vast array of unique fruit and veg, smoked fish, dried hibiscus flowers, and wonjo juice – a sweet, refreshing, and healthy beverage – to name just a few. Located just behind the market is the riverbed, where much of the market’s fresh fish is brought in and smoked before being sold to eager customers.

Finally, the wholesale section is where the true character of the market resides, showcasing hats, clothes, bags, tins, and other trinkets. It can also be used to grab handy buckets and bottles to carry any goods purchased in the produce market.

Due to its labyrinth of stalls and busy atmosphere, the Albert Market is best visited with an experienced tour guide.
